How to reduce the chances of a drunk driver hitting you

Everyone knows that drunk driving is dangerous. It is easy to avoid drunk driving yourself by simply avoid driving after consuming alcohol. Unfortunately, you cannot control the actions of others. You may never know when there are intoxicated motorists on the road putting you at risk.

So how can you avoid a drunk driver hitting you? Here are some lifesaving tips for reducing your chances of encountering an impaired motorist.

Avoid driving late at night

Most drunk drivers hit the roads in the late evening and very early morning. This is when most people leave bars, nightclubs and parties. Restrict your late-night driving as much as possible. The less time you are on the road at night, the safer you are from drunk-driving accidents.

Stay in the right lane when driving at night

Of course, it is impossible to completely eliminate your late-night excursions. If you must be on the highway after 11 p.m., make sure you stay in the slow lane. This is because many intoxicated motorists drive on the wrong side of the highway and end up in your fast lane thinking it is their slow lane. If you encounter a driver like this, you may be involved in a nasty head-on collision.

Know the signs of drunk drivers

Many drunk motorists exhibit the same behaviors, including:

  • Making sudden or illegal turns
  • Speeding
  • Driving drastically slower than the speed limit
  • Weaving out of lanes
  • Turning too wide
  • Straddling the lane markers
  • Keeping turn signals on
  • Braking erratically
  • Slowly reacting to traffic signals
  • Nearly colliding with objects

When you notice a driver like this, stay far away.

Restrict your driving on holidays

Certain holidays are worse than others when it comes to the prevalence of drunk drivers. New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are especially dangerous times to drive. Stay off the roads as much as possible during these celebrations.
