How dangerous are grass clippings to motorcyclists?

If you’re not a motorcycle enthusiast, you may be unaware of the danger that arises when freshly-cut grass clippings are blown into the highway. After all, it’s just plant material. How dangerous can it really be?

As it turns out, it can be lethal. While this is far from an isolated occurrence, the death of a motorcyclist in another state this summer from a collision caused by grass clippings in the road illustrates the serious nature of the problem.

The woman died after losing control of her motorcycle when she rode over the clippings. Her husband was just ahead of her on his own bike when the fatal accident happened. While she managed to survive the initial impact from the collision, she succumbed to her life-threatening injuries just two days later.

Riding motorcycles is a fun pastime, but one that is not without its inherent risks. But while some risks can be mitigated, e.g., wearing properly fitted helmets and approved riding gear for each ride, some accidents are unavoidable.

But an accident caused by slippery grass clippings in a motorcyclist’s way is not one of them. After all, all the homeowner or lawn maintenance company employee has to do is reverse the direction of the lawnmower to shoot the cut grass in the direction away from the road. Something that simple can make the difference between life and death for a rider.

If you suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident caused by grass clippings in the road, it may be possible to take legal action against the negligent property owner or lawn maintenance worker’s company.
